Ricky Romain sitar, and Jon Sterckx tabla, have been thrilling and entertaining audiences throughout the UK since 2001. During this time they have developed a reputation amongst Indian Music lovers nationally and internationally for their on stage rapport and spontaneous and playful musical dialogues.
In 2014 Samswara were voted the best group by MTM South West and Ethnic Minorities Awards for 2014

Ricky Romain is a sitar player based in the South West of England; he has performed regularly throughout the West Country, Nationally and in Europe since the early 1980's. He has also been involved in a wide variety of collaborations and recordings with Classical Indian musicians. In addition he has worked with practitioners from other musical and artistic genres including Jazz, Rock, Folk, World and Western Classical Music, Dance, and Movement. He has also been involved in a number of school and community arts projects using Indian Folk and Classical music as a focus for Inter- disciplinary study. For the last ten years he has been an associate lecturer in Indian classical music at the University of Plymouth.
Over the last 10 years Ricky has worked extensively with tabla player Jon Sterckx; both are professional musicians trained in Indian Classical Music. They have been regularly performing Indian music together since 2001 and have developed a strong performance rapport between them. Their shared understanding and appreciation of North Indian music is always apparent within their performances, as is their mutual enjoyment of each others playing, and of the music being created through their combined playing. Through the sound world of North Indian Rag and Taal, Ricky & Jon's highly engaging and dynamic performances range from slow, meditative, melodies through to fast and highly detailed exciting rhythmical interplay.They have performed at festivals, concert halls, art centres and weddings throughout the UK.
Jon Sterckx is an innovative world music percussionist equally at home with traditional & contemporary music forms.
Jon plays a range of percussion instruments and has worked across a wide range of musical styles, from Indian classical music ( Sitar & Tabla ) and other traditional world music to contemporary experimental & 'fusion' styles, theatre & dance collaborations, and his solo multi-percussion Live Sampling / Live Looping performances – Drumscapes.
Jon has performed with various artists and groups including Indo/Arabic instrumental duo Taaliqa, Fusion group Dhani, the duo Tandj , based on South Indian devotional music, as well as Indian classical music.
